May Day

A conversation between me and my mother:
Mom: "So, listen, I called to tell you that if you're looking for some cake theme ideas, the Kentucky Derby is coming up this weekend."
Me: "I can't make a Kentucky Derby cake, Mom. I have to make a pirate cake, remember?"
Mom: "A pirate cake?"
Me: "Yes, a pirate cake. For G. For his birthday."
Mom: "Right, I meant to ask you about that. Why are you making him a pirate cake?"
Me: "Because... Because he wants one. He's likes pirates."
Mom: "He likes pirates?"
Me: "He's pirate-y. I mean, we make fun... Pirates are cool. You know, kind of a joke. Pirates."
(long pause)
Me: "Look, I can't really explain it."
Mom: "No, I'm sure you can't."
Me: "Anyway, my point is, I don't have time to make a Kentucky Derby cake."
Mom: "Too bad."
Me: "The pirate cake is going to be good."
Mom: "Right, but...mint juleps. Roses. So many possibilities."
Me: "Roses."
Mom: "Mother's Day."
Me: "Okay."

And so it begins. Happy May Day to all.
