Mother's Day approaches. I'm sugaring roses.
Yesterday my son rustled in from the store with a bag in which, he claimed, was a gift that I would "really like."
Which got me to thinking about themed gifts.
Which made me realize that baking-themed gifts are much cuter than book-themed gifts. I've received a variety of pens as gifts over the years and notebooks and, well, that's about as far as the theme goes. But since I took up baking, I've received some delightful and varied little gifts. For example:
From left to right: fizzy bath cupcakes, cupcake candle, pie necklace, cupcake note holder, cupcake earrings, and slice-of-cake memory stick. Which begs another question; why aren't there book equivalents of these things? I've scoured the landscape for book earrings, for example, but nothing. And book memory sticks? It would seem obvious and yet...
Instinct tells me that my son has probably gotten me something that fits into neither category. It could be a piece of jewelry or a cutting board or anything in between. Except a book. It's definitely not a book.
"Don't look under my bed," he said. "Because that's where it is."
"Not to worry," I told him. "Unlike you, I don't mind surprises."
In the meantime, it's back to the roses for me.
